Three weeks have passed since Britain declared war on Germany and Frances and Joyce are battling it out for leadership of the new WI. The other members have to deal with their own problems including Erica whose relationship with Will is tested following his cancer diagnosis. Pat looks for ways to get some respite from her unhappy marriage with Bob whilst Miriam has one last attempt to try and stop David from being called up.
